A growing emphasis on research and on graduate and professional training in American universities has placed increasing demands on faculty and reduced the importance of the traditional university focus on undergraduate teaching. This study examines the implications of this trend for teaching, focusing on the phenomenon of differential allocation of faculty to teaching at undergraduate, intermediate, and graduate levels. Using data from US sociology departments, we analyze the interrelations between various characteristics of academic departments and the differential allocation of faculty to types of teaching. These interrelations are found to differ qualitatively between major research-oriented departments and other departments
